With the great beast hypnotized by Punky’s painfilled heart song, Mort was now left with the job of tying it up. Being submerged in the treacherous Salty Sea was bad enough – but being submerged with a beast like this was lunacy. Before he could chicken out, he grabbed the ball of wire and leaped in. He was going where no human had gone before – apart from Singrum Kelp (and we all know what happened to that poor sausage).

Mort plunged into the water and tried not to scream at the sight of the enormous arms that hung like weird chandeliers down into the deep. He started to swim round and round the rubbery mass and, whenever fear crept into his heart, he summoned the dark cloak of hate by telling himself: Dad and Gosh and Gee are in the guts (or worse) of this terrible creature. He worked hard, winding the wire and doing the best front crawl he’d ever done, binding the Belgo good and proper like a kipper parcel. It didn’t protest, it didn’t struggle – it was enchanted by the screaming song of the rock-crusher above.

Mort climbed back on board and stuck sponges in his ears while Punky sang on to keep the Belgo calm as they towed it home.

The rocky docks of Brutalia came into view and what a sight awaited them! The entire population of Brutalia had come to see the arrival of the Queen’s Golden Behind, including the Queen (who thought it looked bigger than usual). The cheering made Mort feel like a hero. He even welcomed the pomp of the Royal Parp Horns.

The Belgo was helpless out of water – powerless – and, as the guards heaved it on to dry land, Punky placed her arm round Mort’s shoulder.

“I didn’t think you had it in you, Mort the Meek. Maybe I should call you Mort the Murderer from now on!”

The words tiptoed like ice spiders down his spine. Mort the Murderer.

“Come on, let’s be famous!” Punky yelled.

The crowds threw cabbages and crabs in the air to celebrate and Mort scanned the throng for faces he recognized. Mum! Scribe Pockle! The shin-kicking kids! Sally McRoot! And Weed.

Weed was the only one who wasn’t smiling. Or throwing vegetables and crustaceans. He made a point of catching Mort’s eye before he shook his head and turned away.

That’s so out of character, Mort thought as he watched him go.
